I’ve been lazy about updating my blogs the last few weeks, and as such have decided to make it one of my resolutions to post at least once a day both in The Cooler Zone as well as DR’s Corner.

Anything related to me personally will be posted in DR’s Corner, while anything not related to me will be posted in The Cooler Zone, until I decide otherwise or change the rules :)

I was walking around The World’s Biggest Bookstore with a friend yesterday, and was browsing the business section, when I noticed this book called Blog Marketing. I quickly pointed out to my friend that the guy who wrote that book was my former IT Manager :)

It was quite an interesting feeling, knowing that one person you know has a book published. Even though I knew that Jeremy already had that book published for a few weeks, seeing it on the shelf of a bookstore just was an experience in itself. Somehow in my mind, if a person has a book released, he/she’s a celebrity; and the best part? The knowledge that that person is an acquaintance of yours :)

Within the last few years, I’ve seen a debate going on about the greeting “Merry Christmas”. It seems that certain groups feel offended by the phrase. They want it to be politically correct and changed to “Happy Holidays” or something similar that excludes the word “Christmas”. This Christmas, I’ve seen more and more people get away from the “Merry Christmas” greeting, and instead just say “happy holidays”.

I find this quite ridiculous. With other religions/beliefs, you can find people being congratulated on celebrating their beliefs, Hanukkah, Ramadhan, etc. Nobody seems to be raising a stink about this at all? Why is it that when Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ into this world, people suddenly act defensive and weird? Trying to take out the word “Christ” from Christmas just seems like a stupid thing to do. This is a holiday that has to do with faith and belief in Christ, so why take that out from the greeting?

Personally, I don’t really care what the politically correct phrase is. For me, it’s still wishing everyone a “Merry Christmas” and a happy new year !

Apparently a boy in China became addicted to the World of Warcraft online game, tried to replicate a scene from it, and jumped to death from top of a building. The parents are angry and are trying to sue Blizzard, the company who developed the game. [Link]

I personally think this is quite ridiculous. Although I admit that games have sometimes grown out of hand with their content, subscription prices and addictiveness, it is still actual people who make the decision to buy and play these games.

In this case, the boy was allowed to play the game until he became addicted. Can you blame the developer for something such as this? Shouldn’t it be the parents’ responsibility to supervise and monitor their child, ensure that he doesn’t play too much, and not get addicted to these kinds of games? Shouldn’t they have given him a talking to about his apparent overindulgence in online gaming? Shouldn’t there be limitations from his parent on the amount of time he could spend online?

I believe that although gaming is a good way of relieving stress and enjoying life, too much of it is quite bad for your health and life; it makes you become enclosed and lack social interaction skills. The parents of this boy are trying to shift the blame to other people, when they should’ve realized that there’s nobody to blame but themselves.

The answer to kids becoming addicted to online activities isn’t shutting down all and everything that is online; it’s having responsible parents who explain the disadvantages of being cocooned up in a virtual world, and enforce rules to make sure these kids go out, enjoy other activities, do their homework and be around other people. It is the responsibility of parents to keep track of what their children are doing, instill moral values in them and make sure of their well being until they are ready to be on their own.

I’ve always known that my design skills left much to be desired, and after awhile decided that I’m just gonna scrap that old design that I tried on my own, and use some existing templates.

I’ll be doing a few changes here and there during the next few days, and hopefully the site will look better without my attempts at design :). Thanks to my brother who did the logo you see at the top right corner.

Recently, I bought a book called Code Complete 2, which is one of the best software engineering books around based on my research.

One of the topics I’m reading is about the mental juggling act that programmers are required to do on a regular basis. In a high concentration mode, keeping track of various objects, classed, functions and variables, programmers are sometimes in a “zone”. I know this, because I’ve experienced it many times. At times like these, you’re just so focused, that a tiny, quick interruption will just break everything and the result is like crashing down mentally. It’s very annoying and drains so much energy out of someone.

So people, if you’re trying to get your programmer upset, or you have a beef with a programmer and are trying to get back at him, wait till he’s in the “zone”, then just try your best to distract him. Guaranteed to annoy the heck out of him )

Just finished unpacking into my new cubicle in the new office. It feels a lot more cramped than usual, but I’ve settled in fine. The new office is located in a pretty good location, I don’t have to leave the building to get food, lots of shopping stores, and direct access to the subway. The only drawback is that I have to spend extra money on TTC tickets/tokens now since I can’t walk from Union to here (I could, but it would take at least half an hour, and I don’t care to do that in winter :) ).

Have you ever tried Icewine before? I’m not much of an alcoholic beverage drinker, but if I do get a drink or so, this would be one of my first choices. It’s sweeter than regular wine and a whole lot more expensive too ) .

Well, my story goes like this:
- I got a complimentary bottle of white wine when I stayed in a Niagara Falls hotel a couple of weeks ago.
- Totally forgot about it, and left it in the fridge, as I don’t really like wine at all.
- Saw it in the fridge and decided to see what this one tastes like.
- Found that it was sour as grapes, and was gonna throw it away.
- Just randomly thought that maybe some sugar would make the taste better.
- Added sugar, stirred and mixed it.
- Discover that it tastes very very similar to Icewine.

So, now I know how to get Icewine at a discounted price ) Maybe I’m just a novice wine drinker and don’t know what real good wine tastes like, but hey, it’s good enough for my liking.

I’ve been away from blogging for quite a bit. Basically I’ve been swamped with work for the last couple of weeks. It’s interesting that sometimes when it’s really slow at work, nothing happens and I’m nearly bored to death, but when things get running, they tend to hit you at the same times :).

Meanwhile, I also have to keep applying for full time jobs within this place. Haven’t managed to get any interviews yet, but there are a couple more positions in the horizon that I’m applying for. We’ll see what happens next. If I don’t get any job, I’ll probably head back to Indonesia a few months after our second child is born. Don’t know if it’s worth staying in Canada anymore.

My Fantasy NBA team is set !!!. Each year we play, I never seem to get any top picks. This year was no different, I got the 12th pick out of 12 teams. What luck eh? :) Here’s my team lineup:
- Jason Kidd
- Ben Wallace
- Larry Hughes
- Caron Butler
- Joe Johnson
- Tyson Chandler
- Deron Williams
- Raef LaFrentz
- Desmond Mason
- Ricky Davis
- Primoz Brezec
- Damon Jones
- Juwan Howard
- Shaun Livingston
- Matt Harpring

Wish me luck in this year’s competition !!!

Starting to get cold in Toronto, better get my winter gear ready.
