RIP Steve Irwin, best known as the daring "Crocodile Hunter". He died getting pierced through the heart by a stingray tail because he got a bit too close to it.

For the last few days, I’ve been trying to find a quote to send all our packed stuff (clothing, books, photos etc.) to Jakarta via sea freight. The quotes are around the $1200 – $1700 range for 5 boxes of 18" x 18" x 22", door to door delivery. I’m not sure if that’s a good price or not, considering we could probably purchase everything in the box for that price :) (I guess it’s still better than us trying to balance carrying 5 boxes and 3 luggages going back to Indo :) ).

The most interesting part was that one company suggested I talk to Fedex. I always thought this wouldn’t be much help, thinking that air freight would cost a ton of money (I did the online quote, and it turned out to be almost $5000 !!!). But anyway, I called in and talked to a rep, and to my surprise, he brought the price down to about $1700, door to door delivery within 1 week!. A very interesting quote indeed. So, we’re still deciding on whether to send it Fedex or just try to get the cheapest sea freight shipment.

Next up, flight tickets :)

The more I learn about Mississauga’s Mayor, Hazel Mccallion, the more respect I have for her. I mean, how many 85 year old women mayors in the world are there? And even further, how many are healthy, active, tough, and taking care of almost 1 million citizens in her area?

Well, yesterday, she also proved how much her constituents respect her. She commanded a person ready to kill himself to come down from his roof. You know what? The police have been trying for a couple of hours to get this guy down with no results, but when the mayor came and told him to come down, he didn’t ask questions or resisted, he obeyed straight away, end of story. Now that’s what I call respect! [Link]

Hey everyone, since we’re trying to sell our condo, we need to get rid of lots of stuff to get it cleaned up. The items and pictures are listed at http://www.darrickrochili.com/movingsale .

Please feel free to contact me if there’s something you want that’s not listed, we might have it :).

Hi everyone, due to reasons I’ve mentioned in my blog, there have been no posts for the last couple of weeks, but now I should have some time on my hand to start posting again.

You’ve noticed that I’ve also moved the site to a WordPress 2.0 engine because, as with my site, I couldn’t get it to work with QumanaXP.

Should be more posts coming up soon.

Hi everyone, I’m back after a long absence. Sorry for not letting anyone know. It’s been a hectic couple of weeks trying to cope with another baby in the family. The last few weeks, my older son was sick twice, baby got a cold, and now my son is sick again with a fever, so it’s been a vicious cycle.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I’m still here, and will start posting more often now that I can breathe a bit easier (I said a bit :) Still lots of those sleepless day and nights, making me feel like walking cyborg some days).

Will post an update after this about what I’ve been up to and what’s going on in my life.

If you either intentionally or unintentionally use your language and name your product something which translates to a well known brand, you could get sued. [Link].

I wonder if a central and global authority for copyrights should exist, having the list of copyrighted brands/trademarks for everybody in the whole world, including different translations in different languages?

Do you ever wonder why the clerk at checkout counters in department stores ask you for your phone number / postal code? I usually just give it out freely without much thought.

Seeing this picture makes me think though (especially the first line about adding to their mailing list). Maybe next time I won’t be so generous with my answer to those questions.

During the past boxing day, 7 people were shot in the Yonge St. area, and a teenager was killed. Apparently two groups of idiots decided started a gun battle in the middle of a very crowded area. Some of the alleged perpetrators were arrested thereafter and police are still hunting for the rest of these cowards.

Another life loss to senseless violence, and some leaders are trying to shift the blame elsewhere. I really don’t know whether to laugh or cry at the idiocy of trying to blame the US for exporting guns to Canada for all these gun violence.

Since the beginning of the year, when the shootings in Toronto began to rise dramatically compared to last year, lots of the answers that I’ve heard from our leaders seem to say: “It’s the US’ fault since they’re the ones exporting guns here”. Do they really think that people in this city and country for that matter are really that dumb? Everybody knows that it’s not the US who’s pulling gun triggers, firing bullets, building gangs, distributing drugs around the country. It’s actual people in Canada who are doing these things. If these so called leaders are trying to shift the blame from themselves, can’t they actually think of something better to say than this? Blame the education system, blame the support systems, blame divorce rates, blame parents, blame anything but blaming the US. It just sounds so ridiculous and a simplistic view of things.

I’m not a pro or anti US person, but just looking at how these politicians can’t even think straight and find a solution just drives me crazy. Please stop running around the bush blabbering nonsense; just do something already. Instead of blaming things on everybody but yourselves, shut your mouth, take it like a good leader, and do what you guys are supposed to do: find a solution, work for the good of the citizens.

I’ve been lazy about updating my blogs the last few weeks, and as such have decided to make it one of my resolutions to post at least once a day both in The Cooler Zone as well as DR’s Corner .

Anything related to me personally will be posted in DR’s Corner, while anything not related to me will be posted in The Cooler Zone, until I decide otherwise or change the rules )
